Alan Shearer has delivered a gushing verdict on Liverpool star Mohamed Salah, but claims that it is “too soon” to include him in a list of the best-ever overseas players to play in the Premier League.

Salah, 26, was sensational for the Reds last season, scoring 44 goals in 52 total appearances as the Merseyside club reached the Champions League final.

However the Egypt international has not been quite as prolific this term, with 20 goals in 41 outings, and none in his last five Premier League games.

Newcastle legend Shearer believes that as good as Salah is, he is not quite among the best foreign players to have played in England’s top-flight just yet.

“His numbers for goals to games are incredible, but it is too soon to be including him in this list. If he does it for a number of years and scores the amount of goals he has, then we can discuss it,” Shearer said on the BBC Sport website.

OPINION

It is way too soon to talk about Salah as being one of the best over-seas players to ever play in the Premier League. There have been so many greats over the years. Thierry Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Aguero and Luis Suarez are some of those players and at the moment, all of them far surpass what Salah has achieved in England so far. If the Egyptian wins the Premier League title with Liverpool this season then that will surely boost his stock, however we need to see a good three or four solid seasons to name him among the best. He will definitely get there eventually, as long as he stays put at Liverpool. Salah has been criticised at times this term, but that is only because he has been a victim of his own success. The former Chelsea attacker is still one of the top three or four players in England, and not scoring in five games isn’t going to take that away from him.
