BBC Radio 5 Live pundit Chris Waddle was blown away by Jordan Henderson after the Liverpool midfielder helped England thrash Czech Republic on Friday night.

Raheem Sterling’s hat-trick helped the Three Lions on their way to a 5-0 win in their opening Euro 2020 qualifier at Wembley.

And while Waddle understands that all the talk will be about the Manchester City forward, he was also impressed by Liverpool captain Henderson.

“It was a very good performance by England. They were far better than the Czech Republic and it showed tonight. England were absolutely too good for them. Raheem Sterling will get all the headlines for his hat-trick but I thought Jordan Henderson had a very, very good game,” said Waddle, as quoted on BBC Sport’s website [09:39pm].

OPINION

Henderson played very well for England in their win on Friday night. The former Sunderland midfielder has been horribly under-rated by certain fans for his performances on an international stage, but he bossed the clash against Czech Republic and England would not have won as convincingly as they did if he was not on top of his game. Henderson has been Liverpool’s ‘Steady Eddie’ since joining them from Sunderland, and his unglamorous role is perhaps what has led to a lot of criticism. You cannot argue about the fact that he played well on Friday though, spaying passes about around the pitch, winning possession and kickstarting attacks. It will be interesting to see if Gareth Southgate plays him against on Monday when England take on Montenegro in Podgorica. He might rotate the side around to keep managers like Jurgen Klopp happy. However Henderson played so well that he is surely undroppable.
