Ian Wright has claimed that people were expecting more from Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita.

The Guinea international has struggled to make an impression on Merseyside since joining from RB Leipzig in the summer, but has forced his way into Jurgen Klopp’s plans in recent times – although he is still yet to score a goal for the Reds.

Speaking on Radio 5 Live, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo (10.52), Wright said: “Keita, we are expecting a lot more from him. In his last season at Leipzig, he had nine goals and seven assists.

“Klopp has brought him in, and he might have thought he might have nicked a few more goals up to this point.”

OPINION

It’s been a strange season for Keita so far. At first he was nothing short of poor, and many Liverpool fans must have been feeling massively underwhelmed after having waited so long to see the midfielder in action. Since then, his performances have fluctuated, and after a period of looking as if he had really turned a corner for the Reds, he appears to be back in the bad books after a spell of disappointing form. The midfielder isn’t scoring enough, or any, goals and with just one assist, he isn’t providing either. Admittedly, he is playing in a slightly deeper role than he did in the Bundesliga, but that shouldn’t excuse a blatant lack of quality where it is needed most. Hopefully things will turn themselves around for the 24-year-old, but at the moment, unless he can right himself shortly, you have to wonder how much of a future he has at Anfield.
