Durham: Liverpool are incredibly lucky

talkSPORT presenter Adrian Durham has labelled Liverpool ‘incredibly lucky’ after they were given a relatively favourable draw against Porto in the Champions League.

Jurgen Klopp’s side could have drawn the likes of Premier League rivals Manchester City, Italian champions Juventus or Spanish heavyweights Barcelona, but they instead ended up with the Portuguese greats.

Durham wasn’t impressed: “Liverpool are always lucky,” he told talkSPORT. “I mean, they get Porto. Arsenal have got a harder draw in Europe than Liverpool which is incredible.

“It’s just a whole string of luck for Liverpool in Europe. Is it just me, have I read this wrong? Or does everybody realise Liverpool are incredibly lucky?”

OPINION

This is just complete nonsense, isn’t it? Liverpool weren’t lucky when they drew one of the best teams in Europe in Manchester City at the quarter final stage last year. Nor were they fortunate to get a European heavyweight like Bayern Munich in the Round of 16 this time round. If any team could be considered lucky in terms of the strength of the opposition they regularly get paired against in European competition it’s Manchester United. Granted they’ve ended up with Barcelona this time, but generally over the years they have been extremely fortunate in both the group stages and the knockout phase of European competition. Liverpool have got a good draw here, there’s no doubt about that, but to say that they’re ‘always lucky’ is just ridiculous. It wasn’t lucky that their captain came off injured in the early stages on Wednesday, was it? Nor was it when Mohamed Salah went down in last year’s final. This is a typically bizarre claim from Durham.
