Former Premier League midfielder Robbie Savage has praised Liverpool left back Andrew Robertson for his part in Roberto Firmino’s goal against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

The 25-year-old set up the Brazilian’s first half strike at Anfield with a truly magnificent cross, which was powered home by the former Hoffenheim man.

Savage was very impressed: “The delivery from Robertson on his left foot, he whips the ball with pace and power and the weight is perfect,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“Firmino finds the space and is unmarked. He heads it down and it is 1-0 Liverpool.”

OPINION

Savage is absolutely bang on the money with his assessment of Robertson’s part in Firmino’s goal. The Scotland international delivered a pin-point cross, perfectly weighted right onto the head of the Liverpool attacker. It was beautiful to watch, a swinging, masterful delivery into the Tottenham box. It meant that Firmino didn’t have to work hard too put the ball in the back of the net. All he needed to do was direct it past Hugo Lloris, with the Frenchman left stranded. There was nothing he could do, as soon as the ball left Robertson’s foot it was inevitable that it was going to be powered past the World Cup winner. The Liverpool left back has truly become a world class player at Anfield and we saw that again on Sunday. He offers so much to this Reds team, both offensively and defensively and never was that more obvious than against Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
