Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has blasted Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris for his efforts when conceding Liverpool’s late winner on Sunday afternoon.

The Reds and the Lilywhites looked to be heading for a draw at Anfield as they went into the final five minutes but a header from Mohamed Salah was palmed into Toby Alderweireld by the French shot stopper and ricocheted across the line.

Criticising the Tottenham defence for their late reactions to the cross into the box, Neville singled out Lloris for criticism, insisting that he had to do much better.

Neville said on Sky Sports’ coverage (31/03): “I said said dangerous and desperate, Alexander-Arnold puts it into a good area and Harry Kane gets a great header, height and distance, but they just don’t come out and pick up.

“Danny Rose is sleeping a little bit and Salah gets his head on it. I have to say the goalkeeper Lloris, it’s poor handling, he has to get hold of that. What a massive goal for Liverpool Football Club. Shocking from Lloris, he has to do better. Liverpool – they don’t care.”

Opinion

Only football can produce such drama on such a regular basis and what a massive result this could turn out to be in the Premier League title hunt. Liverpool never gave up and in the end their efforts paid off, but they will have to count themselves pretty lucky Lloris dropped such a shocker to give them the win. Had the French stopper caught the ball or even got a better connection with his punch to get it out of the box then there is little doubting the points would have been shared but instead they leave Anfield with all three points in their pocket. As Neville says, the Reds will not care one bit how their winners come between now and the end of the season and victory puts the pressure right back on to Manchester City. Someone is going to have to win this title and it could well come down to who drops a point or two. Liverpool managed to avoid that on Sunday with a bit of luck – can they keep up their fortunes for the rest of the campaign?
