OPINION

Nobody would have blamed Rhian Brewster if he had let his head drop over the past year, or if it took him a while to get back into the swing of things. After a dreadful ankle injury that has kept him out of action since last January, the 18-year-old has undergone a gruelling rehabilitation process, but made his comeback in a behind the scenes friendly on Friday afternoon – and what a comeback it was. The England youth international bagged a brace as he immediately picked up where he left off, and honestly, on the strength of this showing, there is nothing to suggest that he can’t go on to become a serious player for the Reds in the very near future. One goal in particular stood out, with the forward curling an exquisite strike past the helpless goalkeeper from some distance. It was technically perfect, and a reminder, as if one was needed, of just why everybody around Melwood is as excited as they are about Brewster. He has the potential to be top, top class, and having hit the ground running as seamlessly as he has here, you wouldn’t bet against him making strides towards realising that potential in the very near future.
