Liverpool’s supporters were given yet another tantalising glimpse of the future by their on-loan winger Harry Wilson on Sunday.

The 20-year-old, currently starring at Championship side Derby County, produced another virtuoso display in Wales’ tremendous 1-0 win over Slovakia in Cardiff.

Admittedly the youngster was outshone by goalscorer Daniel James, but so was everyone in a red shirt, including world class talent Gareth Bale.

But Wilson once again showed enough to suggest that he does indeed have what it takes to make an impact on Merseyside in the coming years. He’s not a big name nor does he come with a hefty price tag, but we’ve seen this season with Naby Keita’s struggles that those things are no prerequisite for success.

At a time when Great Britain is producing phenomenal young talent, from Jadon Sancho and Declan Rice to David Brooks and David Bates, Jurgen Klopp must be considering giving Wilson free rein in the Liverpool first team squad next season.

He needs to trust in youth, and he could save himself millions as a result. Wilson has shown that he’s too good for the Championship this term, while he proved yet again that he can cut it at international level on Sunday.

He was a lively presence from start to finish in the Welsh capital, causing the opposition constant problems with his pace and sending a fierce drive goalwards in the second half.

His performance showed the Reds fans what they could be witnessing on a weekly basis next season. There’s no doubt after this showing that he is good enough to, at least, form a part of Klopp’s first-team squad next campaign.
