Andy Robertson became only the third defender in the Premier League era to assist ten goals in a single season in Liverpool’s 5-0 victory over Huddersfield.

After an impressive performance from the Reds, it was the Scotsman who had the last laugh, as his assist meant his bet with fellow teammate Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was a winner.

According to Liverpool FC, The Ox challenged Robertson to register ten Premier League assists at the start of the season, and in doing so the midfielder would add a framed ‘Robertson 26’ shirt alongside the Lionel Messi jersey in his home.

The Reds defender shared that Oxlade-Chamberlain had been panicking this season with him continue to rack up assists as the playmaker didn’t believe the Scot would win the bet.

“I want it above his bed so he’s always reminded of me every time he goes to sleep!” said Robertson, speaking to Liverpool FC.

“At the start of the season it was a bit of banter, he said: ‘If you get 10 Premier League assists, sign a shirt and I’ll put it up on my wall.’

“I don’t think he expected me to get it and he started panicking – but I’m glad to get it and there’ll be a ‘Robertson 26’ shirt up there next season!”

OPINION

Robertson has been one of the stand-out signings since his arrival at Liverpool, and he has once again shown his class this week after recording his tenth assist of the season. As only the third defender to reach this milestone for a single season in the history of the Premier League, it’s certainly an unbelievable achievement for the Scotland international. However, this achievement now has an even greater meaning, after the bet placed between the two Liverpool teammates has found its conclusion before the season has even finished. Oxlade-Chamberlain also had a part to play in Liverpool’s victory over Huddersfield, as he made his long awaited return from injury to take part in the back end of the fixture. His memory of the game won’t be about himself though, as he will always remember this game as being the match which sealed his fate, in having a signed Robertson shirt hung up above his bed for the foreseeable future.
