Pundit Tony Cascarino has cast doubts over whether Liverpool can win the Premier League title this season if Mohamed Salah continues to go without scoring a goal.

The Reds saw off Tottenham at Anfield on Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 victory, Salah playing his part with a header which was palmed by Hugo Lloris into Toby Alderweireld and into the net for the late winner.

However, the Egyptian international has not netted in his last six Premier League outings now and Cascarino wonders whether his form means that the Reds will slip up before the season is out.

He wrote in his column for the Times: “If Liverpool are going to beat Manchester City in the title race there are going to be a lot of edgy moments like yesterday.

“They don’t look confident and Mohamed Salah’s recent displays sum that up. He was close to being substituted when the winning goal went in and if Hugo Lloris had not dropped his header, then people would have been saying that Salah had missed a golden opportunity to win it at the death.

“Can this team get over the line with their talisman clearly having the yips in front of goal?”

Opinion

Cascarino is only saying what a lot of Liverpool fans will be thinking heading into the final games of the season. The longer Salah goes without scoring, the more his confidence will dip and that will affect not only his but his teammates’ performances. Manchester City are not going to drop too many points before the season is out and that means that Liverpool have got to keep picking up wins by hook or by crook. They did exactly that against Spurs and perhaps Salah’s involvement in the winning goal, forcing Lloris to make a save with his header, will bring their talisman’s confidence back. The fact of the matter is that he cannot afford to be squandering chances in front of goal and has got to find that golden touch which he had last season. If not, he goes from being an outstanding player to just a very good one and with City’s stars showing the right sort of form at this crucial stage of the season, very good might not even be enough.
