OPINION
You would be forgiven for getting swept up in the drama and emotion in the moments after Liverpool’s late, late winner against Tottenham on Sunday afternoon. A terrible piece of Hugo Lloris goalkeeping and some unfortunate defending from Toby Alderweireld led to a crucial goal that could have huge ramifications for the title race. Naturally, everybody in a red shirt inside Anfield lost their heads, and while the Kop went wild, the players piled into the corner to congratulate Mo Salah, the man who caused the chaos. One Liverpool ace had other ideas, however. Trotting over to the edge of the pitch after his teammates, Virgil van Dijk, already a hero following an exemplary piece of defending against Moussa Sissoko, picked up the ball and proceeded to hoof it clean out of the stadium. It has to be seen to be believed. To clear the roof at Anfield with a single punt is some feat indeed. To quote Alan Partridge, van Dijk must have a foot like a traction engine. The sheer power is absolutely awe-inspiring, but it also shows a player completely switched on at all times. There is no way that van Dijk didn’t have one eye on the clock when he booted that ball halfway across Merseyside, and that kind of awareness, while morally dubious, is good enough to win titles.
