Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has revealed what Jurgen Klopp told him prior to his introduction against Southampton on Friday night.

The £140,000-a-week midfielder [Spotrac] was brought on just before the hour mark with the scores at 1-1 against the Saints, but found the net in an impactful cameo as the Reds stormed to a 3-1 win.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Henderson gave details of what his manager asked of him before the substitution.

He said: “Make a difference.

“Use our experience and then make a difference. Help the lads, get them going because we were under a bit of pressure.

“I felt as though we did that coming on, but so did everybody else.”

OPINION

This was a huge, huge cameo from Henderson. The Liverpool captain was benched against Southampton, but the manner in which he came off the bench to help fire his side to a vital win should not be underestimated. The midfielder probably hasn’t scored as many as he should have over the years in a red shirt, but he was there when it mattered most last night, and you could see just how much it meant to him on the basis of his wild celebration. Liverpool needed that win last night, and to pull it out of the bag with the pressure on, and with Manchester City now facing a very tough run of fixtures, was absolutely massive. If Liverpool do go on to win this title race, this could well be the match that comes to be viewed as the key turning point in their battle with the defending champions.
