Robert Huth says he would be “surprised” if the likes of Real Madrid are not looking at signing Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk.

He says that there are not many other players who are like the 27-year-old, and that he would “definitely” watch him in action if he starred alongside the likes of Raphael Varane in La Liga.

Huth also drooled over the impact the Reds star has been making this season, admitting that he is someone who is just good at everything and makes the rest of his teammates perform better.

“I’d be surprised if these guys [Real Madrid and Barcelona] aren’t looking at him. There aren’t too many players [like him]. Imagine him and [Raphael] Varane at Madrid. I know they’ve still got [Sergio] Ramos – and he’s obviously at the top of his game – but he’s considerably older than Van Dijk,” he told the Daily Star.

“Varane is a similar sort of age. Imagine them for five years at Madrid. Jesus, I’d definitely watch that!

“You get many defenders who are good at one thing or another, but he’s just generally awesome at everything. Set pieces were a big issue last year for Liverpool where teams would exploit them. They would be winning comfortably and two set pieces makes it 2-2.

“He’s ironed it out with his physicality. He’s the real deal and he makes other players perform better around him as well. Maybe that doesn’t get looked at too much. But, if you look at the players around him, they’ve all stepped up as well.”

OPINION

The fact that Huth has made this claim is not surprising in the slightest. He is right though, why wouldn’t Real be looking at him this summer? The hype that has surrounded him has been justified and they would be mad not to admire him from afar this season. This is a claim that will no doubt worry the Liverpool fans though, as the prospect of the Holland international leaving is not something that they would want to think about. The way he has come in and transformed the defence is quite the achievement, and they obviously do not want to think of life without him. Huth is not the only one to hail Van Dijk’s ability to make the players around him perform better, though. Many pundits have commented on this, and they are spot on to do so. All in all, the Reds are a much better team with Van Dijk in it – but that goes without saying.
