Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has said that the lack of emotion in Liverpool’s play at this stage of the season is what sets them apart from their title chase back in 2014.

The Reds famously let their lead at the top of the table slip – quite literally in the case of Steven Gerrard against Chelsea – to miss out on winning their first Premier League title.

Looking to make up for their lack of top flight titles this season, with a fierce title race against Manchester City as the season heads into its final weeks, Neville insists that the Reds are looking more clinical than before.

Speaking on Sky Sports‘ post-game coverage on Friday (06/04), he said: “At this moment in time, Liverpool are in a good moment, they look less emotional than last time (2014) the way they played. There was a level of desperation last time, a franticness, there’s not that frantic play tonight.

“In the first part the game they struggled, Southampton played really well, but they got control of the game. Control’s important, composure’s important. Passion and emotion at this time of the season – he was clinical (Mo) Salah in a critical moment and he’ll need to be cold towards the end of the season.

“Liverpool are in a far better position than they were that few years ago when they were going for it, at that time it was a bit more desperate, a bit more frantic.”
