Gary Lineker has rubbished the idea of fate being the key to Liverpool’s title challenge, instead arguing that they are on top the Premier League because of merit.

The Reds are currently two points clear at the top of the table after beating Tottenham 2-1 on Sunday, and Lineker has claimed that their bid of the crown is fully deserved.

Retweeting a BBC Sport article on Monday night asking “Is fate taking Liverpool to their first title since 1990?”, Lineker responded: “No, but their football might.”

OPINION

It seems that whenever Manchester City manage to take the initiative in the title race, it is down to their footballing prowess, but whenever Liverpool are the side looking the more likely to lift the crown, we end up talking about fate or  will to win. That doesn’t really seem to fair. Yes, they are the underdogs, but that doesn’t mean that there should be a concerted effort to propagate the narrative of them being in the title race because the footballing gods have made it so. Liverpool are in the title race because of merit and merit alone, and if they can lift the Premier League it will be because of hard work and a brilliant, attacking style of football that has turned them into one of the best sides in Europe. To suggest anything otherwise is to dismiss the work that Jurgen Klopp has done at Anfield, and ultimately feels a little bit disrespectful. It’s going to be close, but only because the Reds have made it that way.
