Clinton Morrison has urged Liverpool to re-sign former favourite Phillipe Coutinho.

The Brazilian left Anfield to sign for Barcelona last January, but has struggled at times in Spain, and has come under fairly heavy scrutiny.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Morrison suggested that a return to Merseyside could be a good move for player and club.

He said: “Coutinho is a tremendous talent. Sometimes you don’t feel at home at a football club, whereas at Liverpool, he was a superstar, he was the main man.

“I’ve got a lot of friends who are Liverpool fans and they said they would love to have Coutinho back.

“He’s probably that missing jigsaw that Liverpool have struggled with where sometimes if the front three aren’t doing it, he can come in those little pockets and create stuff.”

OPINION

What a stunning return this would be if it actually happened. Coutinho was adored on Merseyside, and his departure hit a lot of fans hard. Thankfully, his absence hasn’t been felt too much, and the astronomical fee paid for him meant that the Reds were able to sign both Virgil van Dijk and Alisson – two signings that have transformed them into title contenders. Because of that, and because, when all is said and done, it is all but impossible to say no to Barca, most fans would surely understand why he left and welcome him back, but form a footballing perspective, would it be a good move? Perhaps not. The Reds look more balanced without him in the side, and occasionally looked a little top heavy when he did feature alongside their current front three. There’s probably an argument that a more robust, work oriented midfielder – like an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – would actually be a better fit for Jurgen Klopp’s brand of heavy metal football.
