OPINION

Liverpool could be on the verge of agreeing the largest kit deal in Premier League history, according to ESPN, and it’s fair to say that some fans are fairly excited at the prospect. The Reds are understood to be in advanced talks to sign a deal with the sportswear giants that could exceed the £750 million, 1o year deal Manchester United currently have with Adidas. That would be huge if they can pull it off, and that kind of funding would far outweigh the £45 million-a-year that they currently receive from New Balance. The financial side of the deal clearly makes sense, but from a purely aesthetic point of view, this might not be the best thing in the world for Liverpool. Nike have become renowned in recent years for their carbon copy kits; template designs farmed out in a variety of colours with different badges that are, ultimately, all pretty much the same. There’s nothing wrong with that necessarily, but for a club like the Reds, who pride themselves on their history and on being different to their nearest counterparts, the prospect of having a kit that is essentially identical to that of countless teams around the globe might not go down too well at all when push comes to shove.
