Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain sent a heartfelt message to the club’s supporters after returning from injury against Huddersfield Town on Friday night.

The 25-year-old spent more than a year on the sidelines after going down against Roma in the Champions League last season, but he made his triumphant return in the 5-0 win over the Terriers.

Now, he’s thanked the fans: “367 days later… I can’t tell you how good it feels to be back,” he wrote on his personal Instagram account. “Thank you to everyone who helped to get me back on the pitch, all of the staff at the club and my teammates too.

“Also a big thank you to you, the fans, for supporting me in some of my darkest times as a player. The reception I got tonight is something I’ll remember for life. Thank you.”

OPINION

Oxlade-Chamberlain has been on quite a journey over the past year. He’s gone from breaking through as Liverpool’s most exciting midfielder to sitting on the sidelines for almost the entirety of the club’s assault on the Premier League and Champions League this season. Like he said, there have been some dark days for him. That’s not a surprise at all; indeed, for a young man like him to be in his prime and then suffer a debilitating injury that sees him miss his team’s most exciting season in decades would be excruciatingly frustrating. However, he’s worked hard on his comeback and it was a thrill for us all to see him take the field against Jan Siewert’s side on Friday. The main thing now is for him to continue focusing on his fitness, get back up to speed with the rest of his teammates and help out in the last few games of the campaign if he possibly can. However, he’s already achieved so much in coming back from a devastating injury like the one he suffered.
