Robbie Savage has said what needs to happen in order for Xherdan Shaqiri to get more game time at Liverpool.

The Swiss international has not been seen in the starting XI much this season, usually finding himself utilised as an impact substitute by manager Jurgen Klopp.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live’s 606 (27/04, 18:53), Savage responded to a question asking what the former Stoke man has to do to start more games: “They’ve got to sell Mane, Firmino and Salah”.

Jason Mohammad went on to back up his fellow pundit’s view: “If you’re going to have a crack at a Premier League title, you need a squad and Xherdan Shaqiri knows his role and he is part of a really good squad”.

Shaqiri has only completed four 90 minutes under Klopp whose front three have been incredible in front of goal. The 27-year-old has scored six and assisted two in his back up role for the front three at Anfield.

OPINION

It is hard to disagree with Robbie Savage and his argument surrounding Xherdan Shaqiri. There isn’t many other forwards who could replace Liverpool’s electrifying front three with the form they have been in this season. Between Salah, Mane and Firmino they have hit over 50 goals this season which is an incredible statistic and Shaqiri fully knows his role within the team. When signing for Liverpool in the summer, the Swiss midfielder would have had little expectation in the form of getting starts but has been very effective in his role off the bench. He earned his side a valuable three points with two goals against Manchester United and has supported the squad significantly. Jason Mohammad summed the debate up perfectly, there is a clear structure at Liverpool which has worked brilliantly for two full seasons now and that is the same front three which continuously haunts Premier League defences week in week out and Shaqiri will have to settle for a place on the bench for a good while longer.
