Robbie Savage has named Liverpool duo Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson in his Premier League team of the week.

The defensive pair both impressed in the Reds’ last gasp win over Tottenham on Sunday afternoon, a result that helped them go back to the top of the Premier League table.

Robertson provided the assist for Roberto Firming’s opener, while van Dijk has drawn widespread plaudits for a fantastic piece of individual defending against Moussa Sissoko late in the match.

Savage posted his team of the week on Twitter on Tuesday morning.

OPINION

You have to say that both van Dijk and Robertson are fully deserving of the praise they have been getting since the Tottenham match, and in a game that needed the biggest of performances, they really stepped up when it mattered. You will struggle you find a more perfect cross than that one Robertson whipped in for Firmino’s opener, and as far as his all round game went, he didn’t put a foot wrong. As for van Dijk, the Dutchman was his usual colossal self, dominating proceedings and pulling out an instantly iconic moment of defending to prevent a second Spurs goal with the scores tied at 1-1. Both of these players, like many of their teammates around them, are having the season of their lives, and you just hope that their hard work is rewarded with something to show for it come the end of the campaign. Surely both are shoo-ins for the team of the season, let alone the week.
