Graeme Souness has hit out at Liverpool following their late victory over Tottenham on Sunday, claiming that Jurgen Klopp’s side must be “classier” for the rest of the run in.

The Reds had to rely on a Hugo Lloris howler to take all three points at Anfield, and Souness has suggested that it’s not good enough.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ coverage of the match, he said: “You can’t keep relying on people making mistakes. Lloris has gifted that to them today.

“Enjoy the day, analyse today, but you’ve got to do better. They have to free themselves from that nervousness and play that football that has got them to this stage. Six games to go, you need to win every game by the looks of it.

“Will to win will not win you this league, they have to get back to being a bit classier, a bit more polished the it matters. You can’t always rely on someone making a rick to win you game.”

OPINION

You can see Souness’ point here, but that doesn’t mean that he’s absolutely right. Liverpool have been classy for most of the season, and that has gotten the to where they are right now, but they were always going to hit a stumbling block at some point. After a series of draws allowed Manchester City back into the title race, this is the time when the Reds cannot afford any more slip ups, and they will just be grateful to have taken all three points against Spurs on Sunday. It’s a cliche, but champions win no matter what, and if you can take the victory even when you are at your worst then you are probably on to a good thing. Classy or not, if Liverpool can grind out wins in their next six matches then they have done all they can to take the title, and at the end of the day, when you’re up against a side as good as this City one, that’s all you can do.
