Phil Thompson has heaped praise on Mo Salah for his goal against Southampton on Friday night, suggesting that it could be huge for Liverpool’s title ambitions.

The forward ended his barren spell in front of goal with a stunning strike to give the Reds the lead against their hosts, and help them climb back to the summit of the Premier League table.

Speaking on Soccer Saturday (Sky Sports News, 12.15pm, April 6th), Thompson was quick to praise the Egyptian.

He said: “You think he would be low on confidence, not scoring for eight games.

“He puts it in, you can see the relief, enjoyment on his face. It’s ‘don’t ever doubt me, don’t ever doubt me’.

“All that emotion came out. That could do us absolutely great.”

OPINION

Salah needed this goal, but not as much as Liverpool did. The Egyptian has been uncharacteristically wasteful in front of goal in recent weeks, but he stepped up when it mattered most last night, and absolutely elevated his side with the kind of stunning strike that was his bread and butter last season. To pick the ball up where he did, and to reach the speed that he did as quickly as he did, is impressive enough, but to then provide such a precise finish under so much pressure is simply world class. The Egyptian King has been crying out for  goal to jolt his season back into life, and if this is the strike to do that, it couldn’t have come at a better side. Liverpool face a huge, huge run of games now, and if they can get the Salah we all know up and running again, they will feel a damn sight better about them.
