Virgil van Dijk has given an update on the injury he sustained during Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Tottenham on Sunday, suggesting that he will be fine to play against Southampton on Friday.

The Dutchman seemed to take a heavy blow to his ankle during a piece of exemplary defending against Moussa Sissoko late on in the match, but is confident of his chances of facing his former club.

As quoted in the Liverpool Echo, he said: “I hurt my ankle but hopefully it’s not too bad.

“It hurts, but we will take a look at it. I’ll be fine for Friday.”

OPINION

This is about as big a boost as Liverpool fans could have hoped for. Losing any player at this stage in a title challenge would be a concern, but losing van DIjk would be borderline disastrous. The Dutchman has been imperious for the Reds this season, and there is a strong argument to be made for him winning player of the year. With him in the side, with such a tricky run of fixtures to be negotiated between now and the end of the season, you would perhaps think that losing him would give advantage to Manchester City in the title race, he is that important. But if he as fine as he believes himself to be, then there is no cause for concern and he should be fine to face Southampton on Friday. That game will be no cakewalk, and having the calming influence of van Dijk at the heart of defence will be a huge bonus for Jurgen Klopp’s men.
