Liverpool centre back Virgil van Dijk has revealed that he voted for Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling to win the Premier League Player of the Season award.

The England international has enjoyed a phenomenal campaign for Pep Guardiola’s side, scoring 15 goals and bagging 11 assists in 28 top flight games this term.

Van Dijk has been seriously impressed: “I did what I thought and I thought he deserves it,” he said, as per the BBC. “He’s had a fantastic season. I could have voted for Bernardo Silva as well, and another couple of players from City.

“But I am just being honest. I think he has improved a lot as a player. We will see if he wins it,” he finished.

OPINION

Firstly, the rules prevent players from selecting their teammates, which is why Van Dijk hasn’t opted for Alisson or Mohamed Salah. With that being said, it’s obvious that he would look to City for his Player of the Season selection. Sterling has emerged in recent weeks as the standout candidate from Guardiola’s side. The Englishman has been absolutely superb this season, building on the huge leap he made last campaign with an even better body of work this time around. As Van Dijk says, there are a couple of other City players who have been superb. Bernardo has enjoyed a phenomenal season and is arguably City’s most important player. Sergio Aguero, meanwhile, has had another sensational campaign for the champions. However, Sterling’s impact has probably been the greatest. With that being said, though, Van Dijk himself will surely still come out on top when the Player of the Season result is revealed.
