Former Stoke City star Jonathan Walters took to Twitter on Thursday to aim a dig at Liverpool supporters who were guilty of cheering on arch rivals Manchester United against Manchester City on Wednesday night.

Reds fans were in the very unusual position of wishing for United to do them a favour, by beating Man City and preventing the defending champions from regaining their position at the top of the Premier League table.

However, unfortunately for Liverpool, Manchester City ran out 2-0 winners, with second half goals from Bernardo Silva and Leroy Sane enough to secure a vital victory at Old Trafford.

Walters sent a message to the Liverpool fans on Thursday morning, suggesting that it was shameful of them to support their most bitter of rivals.

“To all the Liverpool fans who were cheering for Man Utd yesterday,” said Walters via his personal Twitter account.

OPINION

Although it is unusual for Liverpool supporters to be cheering one of their historically biggest rivals, it most definitely understandable. Heading into the game Liverpool held a two-point lead at the top of the Premier League table with just three matches to play. However, Manchester City have for the last few weeks had the comfort of knowing they had a game in hand to reclaim their lead and put the title race back in their hands. On paper a trip to Old Trafford was always going to appear to be Manchester City’s most difficult remaining fixture, therefore Liverpool supporters were hoping that this would be the fixture that City would drop points in. As it turned out Manchester City were able to claim all three points and keep the title destiny in their own hands. However, the fact that Liverpool fans were able to cheer on Manchester United shows how much the gap between the two fierce rivals has grown this season. Despite Manchester City’s victory Liverpool supporters will take some comfort from being able to be in the position of cheering on Manchester United, due to the gap between the two sides being so great this season.
