Vinnie Jones has revealed that John Motson told him Liverpool would win the league back during their first game of the season against Watford.

The former Wimbledon man also suggested that he is “rooting” for the Reds as they managed to take their title challenge down to the last day of the season with a late win over Newcastle United on Saturday evening.

Speaking on talkSPORT (May 6th, 6.30am), he said: “I did say it would go to the wire.

“I’ll always remember that first game at Watford. I was having lunch with John Motson and he tipped Liverpool.

“Fair play to Motty, I’m rooting for them because of that.”

OPINION

Fair play to John Motson, this has turned out to be a brilliant call. Liverpool were tipped to make strides this season, but nobody could have foreseen how well they have done, or how far they would end up pushing Manchester City. They could still, of course, lift the title, but even if Jurgen Klopp’s men falter at the last and get beaten to the post by City, they will have still done a remarkable job. The Reds could realistically end the season with 97 points and come second. That is crazy, and speaks volumes as to the quality we have all witnessed this season. The Kop will still be hoping for a miracle, and the most likely opportunity they’ll get is if Leicester City do them a favour on Monday night. With Brendan Rodgers at the helm for the Foxes  it would surely be too poetic for the Northern Irishman to be the man who hands his former club the title after the heartache of 2014. Surely…
