Kevin Phillips has had his say after Divock Origi scored the winning goal in Liverpool’s 4-0 win over Barcelona in the Champions League.

The Sky Sports pundit hailed the 24-year old striker, stating that he believed Origi was outstanding against Barca as he was always looking to run in behind their defence.

“You ask players to step up, and Divock Origi has stepped up.” said Phillips on Sky Sports’ The Debate (22:13 Sky Sports Premier League, Friday May 10th).

“Newcastle, he’s done it again the other night, I thought he was outstanding.

“He was strong, he looked to run in behind, and he was a handful.”

OPINION

Origi is one of the players in the Liverpool squad who has well and truly stepped up when called upon, especially after his star performance in the Champions League against Barcelona which saw his side progress to the final of the competition. There are a number of other players who have been involved too, but arguably none have stepped up like he has. Due to the injury of Jurgen Klopp’s number one forward Roberto Firmino, Origi has had to lead the line for the Reds on a couple of occasions now, and there is no time for mistakes at this stage in the season. The 24-year old has contributed towards the winning goals in both of Liverpool’s previous two fixtures, which have effectively kept them right in the running for both the Premier League title and the Champions League trophy. Klopp will certainly have a tough decision to make in the final of the Champions League, as surely now Origi has warranted a start in the final.
