Former Red Phil Babb has been full of praise after Liverpool defeated Barcelona 4-0 to progress into the final of the Champions League.

The Reds overturned a 3-0 deficit from the first-leg on the nights, and Babb has described the game as being the ‘greatest ever night at Anfield’.

The former Liverpool defender shared he wasn’t alone in that as after speaking to some ex-Reds and club legends, they were all saying it was the greatest night ever at Anfield.

“Once we got that early goal, it was incredible,” said Babb on Sky Sports’ The Debate (22:15 Sky Sports Premier League, Friday May 10th).

“That place was rocking.

“For me, speaking to some of the former players and the legends after the game, they’re all saying it’s ranked their greatest ever night at Anfield.”

OPINION

Arguably, nobody expected Liverpool to overturn the deficit when they came up against Barcelona in the Champions League, yet somehow they managed to do the unthinkable. Of course, there have been many memorable nights at Anfield over the years, but it’s not often that something like this happens, especially against a side of Barcelona’s calibre. It’s easy to see why former players would believe this to have been the ‘best ever’ night at Anfield, and if it leads to European glory being brought back to the stadium, then the Barcelona clash will have even more importance than it did previously. It will be a long, long time before Anfield sees scenes of that nature again for sure, due to the pure magnitude of the victory, and the fact that it was in a European competition. Considering it is beginning to look like the Premier League title may be just out of reach, fans may look back at this night as being one of the more important nights in the history of Liverpool as a football club, as it could be the night which kick-started the journey to European glory on Merseyside.
