Liverpool are part of a clutch of Premier League teams in the hunt for Benfica starlet Gedson Fernandes, according to the Daily Mail.

The Reds are joined in their admiration of the 20-year-old by two of their top six rivals in the Premier League Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.

The central midfielder made the breakthrough this summer on his way to 46 appearances in all competitions, and is now rated at £35million.

Fernandes is the latest player off the hugely impressive Benfica production line.

OPINION

This is an interesting one, isn’t it? It’s long been the consensus that midfield is the area of the pitch where the Reds could most improve, with their defence and attack both the envy of Europe. However, they are slightly more limited in what they can do in midfield, with a slight lack of creativity compared to title rivals Manchester City. However, Fernandes isn’t quite the creative, number ten-type that it appears Liverpool need. He’s more of a traditional box-to-box central midfielder, which puts him in the same mould as the fit-again Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. With that said, does Jurgen Klopp really need him? Obviously he’s an incredibly talented young player, but he’s not exactly what the team require at the moment. You wouldn’t complain about signing someone like Fernandes, but this isn’t something Liverpool fans should worry too much about if they miss out on him.
