Liverpool are keen on a summer move for Real Madrid star Marco Asensio, according to Mundo Deportivo.

The Reds were linked with a big money move for the playmaker last summer, as reported by Marca, but nothing materialised.

According to this latest report, however, Jurgen Klopp’s men could be tempted to rekindle their interest in the 23-year-old Spanish international, who has endured a fairly unimpressive season in the Spanish capital.

Of the 23 games he has started, Asensio has completed 90 minutes just 11 times, and has struggled to make an impression under three successive managers.

The midfielder has as a release clause of £599 million written into his contract.

OPINION

When Liverpool were linked with Asensio last year, there were a fair few people who immediately dismissed the rumour as idle chat, and it’s easy to see why. The Spaniard had enjoyed a stellar season the year before, and had looked bright during the World Cup too. This campaign has been a tough one, however, and while the likelihood of a swoop remains fairly low, it’s a lot more realistic than it was this time 12 months ago. Does that mean he will end up at Anfield. Probably not. Does it mean that his position as Real Madrid’s golden boy is a lot less stable than it was? Absolutely. If Asensio has another disappointing season like he did the term, then there’s no saying that the club wouldn’t be more open to selling him somewhere down the line. This rumour may be a little over the top, but come back to it in a year and see how things stand.
