Paul Merson has suggested that he would not be surprised if Liverpool won the Premier League next year.

The Reds need Manchester City to slip up if they are to stand any chance of picking up the title on Sunday, but Merson is of the belief that they will have plenty of other opportunities to win it, even if they fall short this time.

Speaking on Sky Sports News (May 12th, 12.30pm), he said: “Liverpool fans are very knowledgeable, and they will know that if they don’t win it, they’re around for a long time now.

“When Steven Gerrard slipped the last time they lost the league, everybody sat there and thought ‘well they ain’t doing that again’.

“But this team are around. It would not surprise me next season if they won the league. I think this is a good, good football team with an unbelievable manager.”

OPINION

This is a major claim from Merson, but who’s going to argue with him. The Reds have been indomitable for most of this season, and have looked every inch champions elect. In many ways it is just terrible luck that they have come up against arguably the greatest team the Premier League has ever seen. If Jurgen Klopp’s men finish on 97 points, and they should, then that will be the third highest total in Premier League history, surpassed only by the two set by Manchester City this year and last. That is incredible, and tells you everything you need to know about how remarkable this season has been. The fans will believe that they can win this title right up until the final whistle today, but if it doesn’t come off for them, they can take a lot of comfort in the knowledge that they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. It is surely a matter of time before that long wait for a title comes to an end.
