Robbie Fowler believes Manchester City will hold their nerve and pip Liverpool to the Premier League title, but disputes the idea that the Anfield club have “blown” their bid.

The Reds need City to drop points against Brighton if they are to stand any chance of lifting a first title in 29 years, but Fowler doesn’t see it happening.

Writing in a column for the Mirror, he said: “I never once went into the final day of the season with a chance of winning the title That is a huge regret.

“When I hear people suggesting that Liverpool have somehow “blown” the Premier League, or that Manchester City will be bottlers if they can’t beat Brighton on the final day of the season, well, swear words come to mind.

“Both still have a chance on the final day. And when you consider what their rival has achieved this season, that is mind-blowing.

“Between them, they haven’t even dropped a single point in 21 matches. It is unprecedented. It would be unimaginable, if it hadn’t actually happened.

“My head is telling me City will win, but my gut is telling me that too, even if my heart is protesting.”

OPINION

Fowler is bang on the money here. City are in the box seat when it comes to the title now, and it will take a minor miracle for them to slip up and and Liverpool the crown. Does that mean that the Reds have blown it? Absolutely not. This is a ridiculously good City side, maybe the best the Premier League has ever seen. Liverpool could, and probably should finish the season with 97 points. That will be the third best points total ever, beaten only by City and City’s team last year. That is some feat from both sides, and one that deserves enormous credit. It will be heartbreaking for the Reds to go so close and miss out, but all the signs are that they are here for the long haul, and their pain would be eased massively were they to snap up the Champions League trophy on June 1st. Until then, however, all they can do is hope and pray that Brighton can pull off a seriously huge shock.
