Rangers club historian David Mason believes it is inevitable that Ibrox chief Steven Gerrard will return to Liverpool in the future.

The Reds legend joined the Scottish giants as manager before the start of this season and has overseen a big improvement on the blue side of Glasgow, although he was unable to prevent Celtic from adding to their Scottish Premiership collection.

Still, Mason believes Gerrard will be back at Anfield one day: “There has been history in that,” he told the Daily Star. “[Graeme] Souness went to Liverpool but acknowledged it was the worst thing he’s done.

“I think it’s inevitable that if Steven was successful with Rangers and Liverpool were looking, Steven’s name would be in the frame. There are several ifs and buts connected with that. I’m pretty sure if he was successful, he would be favoured for a return to the Kop. But the way Klopp is going, it could be a few years.”

OPINION

Mason is absolutely right, here, but why is he talking about this in the first place? What’s a club employee doing connecting the Rangers manager’s name with another club? What he’s saying may be spot on, but why he’s saying it is anyone’s guess. Still, he is correct. Gerrard’s name is always going to be thrown about in connection to the Liverpool job in the future. Obviously he needs to prove himself with Rangers first, and that includes doing a damn sight better next season than he’s done this time round. Gers made big progress this campaign, but they didn’t win any silverware and that’s the bottom line. Having said all that, Klopp looks like he’s set to stick around on Merseyside for quite some time yet. In the meantime, the former England international needs to do everything he can to bridge the gap to Celtic. If he can knock the Hoops off their… ahem… perch, then he’ll certainly look like an attractive candidate for the Liverpool job in the future.
