Dean Saunders has suggested that Liverpool going trophyless this season would be down to bad luck rather than a failure on their part.
The Reds are likely to finish the season with 97 points having lost just one game in the league so far, but may still be pipped to the post by Manchester City.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Saunders suggested that Jurgen Klopp’s men couldn’t do much more.
He said: “If you’d have asked me at the start of the season, ‘if Liverpool don’t win a trophy is it failure?’ I’d have said yes, because they’ve just give the manager another £200 million to spend on five players.
“But now, after seeing the way the season’s panned out, and getting those points, it’s not failure.
“To lose the league with 97 points, if they get 97 points, is just tragic bad luck.”
“Why don’t they call it the ‘We Got More Points Than Fergie Trophy’?” ?
“He’s obviously got his seat booked for the open top bus tour of Liverpool.”
“He just wants any trophy now.”

OPINION
Saunders is absolutely right here. Prior to Manchester City breaking the 100 point barrier last year, the record total in a Premier League season was 95. For Liverpool to amass 97, a tally that would have seen them win the league any other year aside from last term, and still come up short, is just unfortunate. What can you do in that situation? They have come up against one of the greatest sides this country has ever seen, and they have matched them stride for stride in a pulsating season. That in itself is some achievement, but unfortunately, there are no trophies for second-place. Things aren’t done and dusted just yet, but it will take a minor miracle for them to lift the title now. You have to feel sorry for the Reds. They have been bested by the very best.
