Benfica are keen on signing Liverpool defender Alberto Moreno, according to Portuguese outlet A Bola.

The Spaniard has barely featured for Jurgen Klopp’s side this season, and is out of contract this summer, meaning he is available on a free transfer.

It is understood that the Portuguese league leaders are considering an offer to the 26-year-old as a replacement for current left-back Alex Grimaldo, who is being courted by a number of top clubs, according to the Daily Mail.

OPINION

Not too many Liverpool fans will lose too much sleep over this one. Moreno is well down the pecking order at Anfield, and after not being offered a new contract, his departure is now in the realms of inevitability. On the face of it, a move to Benfica could be a good thing for Moreno. He isn’t a bad player by any means, but you always felt as if he lacked the defensive nous to properly make a go of it in England. No offence to the Portuguese league, but maybe a slight step down in quality could be what he needs to get himself up and running again. Certainly, he would still get to play European football and challenge for titles, and there’s no saying that it couldn’t lead to bigger and better things, but right now, Benfica feels like his kind of level. His time on Merseyside hasn’t been a complete bust, but the sooner it’s over, the better for everybody involved at this stage.
