Premier League legend Alan Shearer has heaped praise on Liverpool full backs Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson.

The two players have worked wonders on their respective sides of the pitch this season, bagging assists galore, and Shearer is a huge fan of both of them.

“The two full backs for Liverpool have been so impressive this season,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live [07/05; 19:18]. “I always try and look at things from my point of view and my position that I played.

“They are, for a centre forward, a centre forward’s dream, because when you look at the two systems that Liverpool and Manchester City play: Liverpool’s game is all about getting those full backs in – and the number of crosses those guys put in… As they have been all season, they’re going to have to do that again tonight.”

OPINION

Shearer is absolutely bang on the money, here. Both Alexander-Arnold and Robertson have been absolutely magnificent this season and there’s no doubt that they are the finest full back tandem in Europe at this moment in time. If they can continue on their current trajectory then they’d be getting up there with some of the best full back pairings the Premier League has ever seen, alongside the likes of Gary Neville and Dennis Irwin and Branislav Ivanovic and Ashley Cole. Neither of those double acts got anywhere near as many assists as Alexander-Arnold and Robertson, though. The crossing ability of both players is absolutely exceptional, particularly Alexander-Arnold’s. Not only are they tremendous offensively, though, they are both extremely strong defensively too. Robertson is probably more well-rounded from that point of view, but they are both as good as it gets in their respective positions – and they’re only going to get better.
