Liverpool Football Club and Jose Mourinho have had a long and rather unruly history. The two parties have never gotten on – never ever.

That’s natural, of course, when you manage Chelsea and Manchester United, two of the Reds’ biggest rivals of the modern era, with Liverpool and the Blues engaging in some epic contests in Mourinho’s first spell at Stamford Bridge.

The Reds faithful will surely have been scratching their heads, then, to hear Mourinho speak in such glowing terms about the club on Tuesday night.

“Even people that is not in love with that club have to admit it’s a magnificent club, incredible stadium and one of the best atmospheres that I have ever played football is Anfield.” he told beIN SPORTS.

It’s a surprise, to be sure, to hear Mourinho speak about Liverpool like this, but it tells you everything you need to know about the prestige and the size of Liverpool as a football club.

Mourinho, arch-antagonist to the Reds as he has been for much of his illustrious career, still speaks about them in glowing terms and can’t help but respect them as a footballing institution.

There are certain clubs that simply have a special feel about them. You have the likes of Manchester United in England, Bayern Munich in Germany and the El Clasico rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid in Spain. There’s no doubt, though, that Liverpool are very much part of that illustrious group.

To command the respect of someone like Mourinho you have to be a bit special, and Liverpool and the Anfield atmosphere are certainly that.

It speaks to the quality of the support inside Anfield that Mourinho has described the atmosphere as one of the best he’s ever experienced. When you think of the games he’s managed in and the stadiums he’s experienced, that’s quite a compliment.

So while there will be plenty of Reds fans confused as to why the former United boss would lavish such praise on their team, his words emphasis what a massive football club Liverpool is.
