RB Leipzig boss Oliver Mintzlaff has named Liverpool as a potential destination for wantaway striker Timo Werner.

The German has hit 19 goals in all competitions this season for the Bundesliga outfit, but it is understood that he would rather not sign an extension with RB, a suggestion that Mintzlaff seemed to confirm.

Speaking to Sky, as quoted by Bulinews, he said: “The situation is still the same. Timo Werner would rather not sign an extension. But that could change.

“I don’t think it’s completely out of the question that he could extend his deal. Everything will be further discussed after the season.

“We haven’t talked to Bayern München about Timo Werner yet.

“Maybe he doesn’t even want to go to Munich. Maybe he would rather join [Thomas] Tuchel in Paris, [Jürgen] Klopp at Liverpool or [Lucien] Favre at Dortmund.”

OPINION

This will fill Liverpool fans with hope. The fact that an opposition manager is mentioning his player in the same sentence as the Red is surely a sign that there is something there, at least on a very basic level, and this could be the start of a proper pursuit. Werner is a top tier striker, a guaranteed goal-getter, and you can bet that Jurgen Klopp would be delighted to have him in his side. Mintzlaff may have mentioned a couple of other teams besides the Reds, but if Werner is determined to leave the club, then there would be few destinations as desirable as Anfield. Klopp has built a world class side capable of challenging for silverware on the very highest level. What sort of player wouldn’t want to be part of that? Werner won’t come cheap, but it is rare that a player of his talent and potential becomes readily available, and Liverpool should go all out to land him.
