Former Premier League striker Noel Whelan has claimed that Liverpool right back Trent Alexander-Arnold is going to become ‘one of the best’ in Europe.

The 20-year-old has emerged as arguably the best right back in the Premier League this season, and BBC pundit Whelan believes he could reach world class level soon.

“What a player he is,” he told Football Insider. “There’s no doubt he will be even better next season and become one of the best players in the Premier League as well as in Europe over the next few years.

“I’m not sure he will end up at right back, but he is winning games from there with his crossing and overlaps, so [Jurgen] Klopp will not want to move him.”

OPINION

It’s an interesting point that Whelan makes at the end there about Alexander-Arnold potentially ending up in a different position to his current right back role. He certainly has the technical ability to go and play in central midfield and spray balls about from the middle of the park. However, with Fabinho excelling at the moment it’s unlikely that that switch will happen any time soon. For now, then, the England international will have to content himself with being the finest right back in the Premier League, possibly the world. It’s difficult to think a better right back than Alexander-Arnold these days. Perhaps Benjamin Pavard, the World Cup-winning Frenchman, but other than that there’s no one you can really put in the same bracket as the Reds star. And, as Whelan says, he’s only going to get better in the years to come. Now there’s an exciting thought for the Liverpool faithful.
