Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore has urged his old club to bring in Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Ruben Neves this summer.

The Portugal international was a key figure for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side as they finished seventh in their return to the Premier League, and Collymore feels he would be perfect for the Reds.

“He’ll know he needs a couple of marquee signings — Ruben Neves would be fantastic for Liverpool — and for his squad not to drop points in such games as the games against Manchester United and Everton,” he told the Daily Mirror.

This comes after Collymore made a flattering Neves comparison recently: “Ruben Neves is one, he’s been on the radar of several clubs. A playmaker. He has the kind of vision of a David Silva or a Bernardo Silva,” he told Stadium Astro [3:36].

OPINION

There’s no doubt that Neves is a top player who would be a fantastic signing for any of the Premier League’s top teams. However, is he really what Liverpool need at the moment? Probably not, you’d have to say. The Reds need a number 10, a playmaker who can make the difference in the final third. They have plenty of quality central midfielders, now they need someone to sit just behind the front three and pull the strings. Neves, for all his quality, isn’t that player. Collymore gets it a bit wrong when comparing the Wolves man to the two Manchester City stars. They both play far more advanced roles than the Portuguese does. Neves sits in central midfield alongside Joao Moutinho and Leander Dendoncker. He’s not someone who spends all game in the final third looking to unlock the defence like the Silvas. So while he’s a top player who would be a great signing for anyone, Neves probably isn’t quite what Liverpool need at this moment in time.
