Former Liverpool midfielder David Thompson was full of praise for defender Andrew Robertson, following the Reds’ 3-2 win at Newcastle United on Saturday.

Liverpool were twice pegged back at St James’ Park in what was a highly pressurised encounter, with Jurgen Klopp’s side knowing they had to win to keep the pressure on Manchester City, heading into their game with Leicester City on Monday.

Andrew Robertson was a key player throughout, as Liverpool managed to score a late winner with Divock Origi’s flicked header from Xherdan Shaqiri’s free-kick finding the net, and Thompson took to his personal Twitter account to single out the Scotland international for praise.

“Andy Robertson is a joy to watch, his decision making, energy, and final ball is up there with the best full backs I’ve ever watched, including Cafu, Carlos, Marcelo, Alves, I rate him up there with the best in world football at this moment.”

OPINION

David Thompson is right to pick out the performance of Andrew Robertson in the win against Newcastle, which keeps Liverpool in the hunt for the Premier League title heading into the final match of the season. The Scotland international’s energy down the left hand side was a key outlet for Liverpool, as they looked to create opportunities against a largely well organised Newcastle defence. Robertson’s performances this season have rightly earned him a mention from Thompson of being amongst the best full-backs in the world at the moment. That is definitely the case for his attacking output from left-back, with his excellent delivery allowing him to register 11 Premier League assists so far this campaign. That puts Robertson in amongst the best performing full-backs in world football this season, in terms of attacking output. However, it may be a little over the top at this stage to suggest that Robertson is amongst the best full-backs ever to play the game, as Thompson suggests, that does not mean he can’t reach that level, it is just that in order to be considered amongst the best ever consistently strong performances over many seasons are needed. There is every chance Robertson can take his form into next season, which if he manages to do will only gain him more adulation.
