OPINION
Liverpool centre back Joel Matip produced another fine performance in Liverpool’s 4-0 win over Barcelona in their Champions League semi final second leg at Anfield on Tuesday night. The Cameroonian has come on leaps and bounds since the turn of the year and is arguably playing close to the level of his centre half partner Virgil van Dijk these days. He’s not the inimitable Dutchman, of course, but he is in wonderful form and that continued against Ernesto Valverde’s side. He made a tremendous challenge on Lionel Messi in the first half when the Argentine great looked to be in, with the former Schalke man making use of those spider-like limbs of his to deny the Barca star. Matip isn’t someone who you generally think of as being vitally important to this Liverpool team, but you can see the difference when Dejan Lovren plays ahead of him. Matip is crucial for Jurgen Klopp’s side at the moment and we saw just why on Tuesday.
