OPINION

What is it with Liverpool and producing top class defenders? At the moment the Reds boast arguably the best right-back in the country in Trent Alexander-Arnold, and have helped Andy Robertson and Joe Gomez turn into two of the most impressive defenders in the Premier League. Add into the equation the imperious Virgil van Dijk and you have a side with a backline to die for. It would seem, however, that they might just have another world beater on their hands. Ki-Jana Hoever has been catching the attention all season long for the Reds’ youth sides all season, and at just 17, already looks as if he could go all the way to the top. A commanding centre-back, his reading of the game is way beyond his tender years, and his athleticism is admirable. Judging by his contribution in the U17 European Championship final on Sunday, he can play a bit the other end too. Hoever has already gone viral during the tournament for a fine solo effort for the Netherlands, but the young Dutchman arguably went one better with a telling intervention in the final. His curling free-kick couldn’t have gotten any close without going in, but after leaving the goalkeeper stranded and rattling back off the inside of the post, it was all his teammate could do to tap it in from close range. It may not have been a goal, but it might as well have been, and Liverpool fans absolutely loved it.
