BBC Sport pundit Don Hutchison has urged Liverpool to sign German striker Timo Werner or Portuguese winger Goncalo Guedes this summer.

The Reds just triumphed in the Champions League final over Tottenham Hotspur last Saturday. However, they will be focused on winning the Premier League next term.

Hutchison has a way for them to do that: “I tell you the one that I would go for: Timo Werner at RB Leipzig,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live. “It’s only a matter of time before Bayern [Munich] probably try and buy him. He’s the right age, 23.

“There’s another one: Goncalo Guedes at Valencia, who is too good for them – I could see him in a Liverpool shirt. Because when I look at [Sadio] Mane, [Roberto] Firmino and [Mohamed] Salah, they have played so much football, in terms of two years, constant football. It’s inevitable that one of those three is either going to lose form or get injured.

“If Liverpool are going to go and try and overtake Manchester City next season, they’ve got to have guys that are ready to step into that first team – like Timo Werner, like Goncalo Guedes.”

OPINION

Hutchison makes a number of of good points here. Liverpool already have an excellent first eleven, that’s beyond doubt. When you look at areas to improve their current team it’s very difficult to find any holes. Aside from maybe a quality number 10, the big issue is strength in depth. They need to have world class players to call upon when things aren’t going their way, like Manchester City have with Gabriel Jesus and Leroy Sane coming off the bench. Divock Origi has turned into a clutch player for the Reds this season, but you would undoubtedly be upgrading on him by signing Werner. Then there’s Guedes, who is a truly quality operator. The two players scored a combined 27 games this campaign, with the German international bagging 19 and his Portuguese counterpart getting eight. The former grabbed another 10 assists this term, while the latter had four. So these are two tremendous players who are proven at the highest level. They would both be terrific recruits this summer.
