Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp could leave the club when his current contract expires in 2022, according to ESPN FC.

The broadcaster claims that the German may decide to take a year’s sabbatical, much like Pep Guardiola did after leaving Barcelona, once his deal ends.

The Reds owners are confident that the former Borussia Dortmund boss will commit to a contract extension, but they have been warned not to pressure him on his future.

Klopp has repeatedly discussed his desire to take a break from the intensity of club management with his family, and may well decide to do so.

OPINION

Well, this is rather disconcerting news for the Liverpool supporters, isn’t it? Klopp has obviously done a phenomenal job since joining the club and delivered them their sixth Champions League triumph on Saturday, so you can’t say that he doesn’t deserve the right to dictate his own future. Being the manager of a club like Liverpool must be extremely taxing, as well as enjoyable, so you probably would need a break after a while. Guardiola went through the same thing with the Catalan giants, so this isn’t something new among top level managers. However, this seems to be far from a done deal at the moment. Klopp is likely weighing up his options in the wake of a historic achievement, but that doesn’t mean that he is definitely going to decide to leave. There’s every chance he could opt to extend his current contract, as well. So we’ll just have to be patient with this one and see what happens.
