Liverpool are not willing to sell back up goalkeeper Simon Mignolet to Crystal Palace for £8million this summer, according to ESPN.

The broadcaster claims that Jurgen Klopp and his staff want the Belgian international to remain at Anfield, having been impressed by his professionalism last season.

Indeed, sporting director Michael Edwards hasn’t even put a price tag on the player. The club will only consider letting him go if an acceptable fee is agreed and Mignolet himself is seriously interested in a particular team.

The Evening Standard reported on Tuesday that Premier League side Palace are mulling an £8million bid for the 31-year-old.

OPINION

This is an interesting one, isn’t it? Ultimately if Mignolet is happy to stick around then Liverpool will be only too happy to keep him, because he is as good as it gets in terms of a number two. When you think about second choice goalkeepers in world football, there’s only really Barcelona’s Jasper Cillessen, Real Madrid’s Keylor Navas and Juventus’s Mattia Perin who you could say are decidedly better than Mignolet. So it would be ideal to keep the former Sunderland man at Anfield, but it’s whether he wants to remain where he is. The club are seemingly willing to allow him to go if he really wants a particular move, as long as they are able to secure the fee they want for the ‘keeper. Liverpool are adept at wringing out big transfer fees for players they can live without, and Mignolet would certainly fall under that category. However, his quality and professionalism make him an ideal number two, so if the Reds can keep him then they obviously will.
