OPINION
International supporters, not just Liverpool fans, were united in their disbelief on Saturday as Sky Sports commentator Martin Tyler questioned whether Reds right back Trent Alexander-Arnold was good enough to play international football during Sky’s live coverage of England’s Nations League clash with Switzerland [09/06; 14:15]. Let’s unpack that query from Tyler then, shall we? He actually believed it was worth asking whether Alexander-Arnold, the best right back in English – if not world – football, was good enough for international football? Come on, Martin. Firstly, club football is played at a higher standard than the international game, that’s indisputable. Secondly, Alexander-Arnold has done more than enough over the past three seasons to earn his place on the right hand side of the Three Lions defence. Thirdly, he’s just won the Champions League after playing in the final for the last two years. But yes, Martin, perhaps he’s not ready for the likes of San Marino and Lichtenstein…

Matin Tyler just asked Gary Neville on @Sky if TAA is good enough to play right back for England in a back 4. Are you serious Martin ? He’s just won the champions league for Liverpool and been arguably the best right back in Europe this year

Martin Tyler: “is TAA good enough defensively to play international football at RB in a four?”
Well, Martin, it’s hard to know. I don’t know whether him playing for a team who have reached consecutive CL finals qualifies him to play against San Marino and Lichtenstein
