Liverpool expect goalkeeper Simon Mignolet to remain at the club next season as they believe he has an important role to play, according to the Times.

The prestigious newspaper claim that for this situation to change, a club that excited Mignolet would need to want his services permanently and be willing to give the Reds a fair fee for his services.

However, the Times report that an attractive fee may not tempt Liverpool into selling the goalkeeper as they claim there’s no suggestion that Jurgen Klopp and sporting director Michael Edwards would rethink Mignolet’s future if an attractive move emerged.

OPINION

Liverpool seem to be taking a tough stance when it comes to keeping Mignolet and that’s quite a surprise. The 31-year-old Reds goalkeeper was rarely used in his 2018/19 season, he made only two appearances, due to being behind Alisson in the pecking order. While Mignolet may be a positive influence in the dressing room and not a disruptive presence despite hardly playing, surely the Reds wouldn’t reject a good offer if one landed on their doorstop? The 31-year-old hardly got an opportunity to put himself in the shop window, and that will continue to be the case next season. After all, Alisson is surely going to remain the Reds’ No.1 goalkeeper for the foreseeable future after proving how good he was in his 2018/19 campaign. The Brazilian 26-year-old kept 27 clean sheets in 51 outings and only conceded 34 goals, his displays in the Premier League also saw him pick up the Golden Glove award. So while the Reds do want a capable No.2 goalkeeper to call upon and Mignolet is definitely that, surely an attractive offer coming in for him, should be enough to see him sold.
