Palace in talks for Clyne and Mignolet

|

Crystal Palace have opened preliminary talks with Liverpool over a potential double swoop for Simon Mignolet and Nathaniel Clyne, according to Football Insider.

The Eagles are understood to be on the lookout for an experienced goalkeeper and a new right-back, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka on the cusp of a move to Manchester United, as reported by the BBC.

Both Mignolet and Clyne have struggled for regular game time at Anfield in recent times, with the Belgian making just two appearances last season, and the defender spending the second half of the campaign on loan at Bournemouth.

It is understood that the Reds will seek a combined fee of around £22 million for the duo, with Mignolet valued at £10 million and Clyne at £12 million.

OPINION

This deal makes sense for everybody involved, truth be told. Mignolet and Clyne have both struggled for regular game time at Anfield in recent seasons, and it’s unlikely that that would change next time around. Both players still have a lot to offer, and both will feel that they can still cut it at the top level. From Liverpool’s perspective, the pair are only going to depreciate in value from this point onwards, so it makes sense to offload them now while the price is still decent. £22 million may not be a fortune, but it could make a very decent dent in any potential big money move that the Reds may try and get over the line themselves this summer. Obviously talks are still at an early stage, but this one could have legs, and it will be interesting to see if anything actually comes of it further down the line.
