Rangers’ swoop to sign Sheyi Ojo will have no impact on their hunt to re-sign Ryan Kent from Liverpool this summer, according to the Glasgow Evening Times.

The newspaper claims that the Light Blues, managed by Anfield hero Steven Gerrard, are still in pole position to sign Kent, 22, on a second loan deal after he lit up the Scottish Premiership with his performances last season.

It is understood that Liverpool’s Ojo, 21, is closing in on a loan switch to Ibrox after arriving at Rangers’ training headquarters on Monday.

Even though he can play on the left-wing, like Reds team-mate Kent, the report makes it clear that this deal will not harm the chances of re-signing last seasons’ young player of the year.

OPINION

Rangers could be lining up with Ojo on the right and Kent on the left next season, and as long as neither of them flop at Ibrox like Ovie Ejaria did last term, this is great news for Liverpool. Kent will no doubt be superb yet again for the Scottish giants, so there are no worries about him going to Ibrox and increasing his transfer value. However there have to be some concerns about Ojo after he endured a miserable loan spell at Stade de Reims in France last term. The former Wolves and Fulham loanee only managed three starts in Ligue 1, and while that is a stronger league than the Scottish Premiership, it’s still not a great statistic. Hopefully he can really kick on under Gerrard’s leadership at Rangers. Kent had a couple of bad loan spells before he headed to Rangers, so the same could happen to Ojo, who might find himself getting his last chance to impress.
